Annot and Entrevaux

The country of Annot and Entrevaux

The "Annot and Entrevaux country" is a valley of pleasant transitions that borrows even from the Alpes-Maritimes a piece of the Var River, just out of the spectacular parade of Da. Luis. Annot, at the edge of the "Grandes Alpes", and Entrevaux, at the entrance of the nice country, plain nor mountain, adorn their rich built heritage the heart of this country, seat of the interpenetration of different moods. The mystery white and fresh the due and the gorges looks misleading tranquillity of the shores of the Var, while the last melezins of the mountains of the Grand Coyer monitor the old chestnut of the Vallon de Coulomp. Here, blocks escaped from the exceptional Cliff sandstone overlooking Annot protect the "cabanoun" enjardines, where villages perch to escape the finite jellies torrential floods and winter... The due seem Tonner natural doors: the most imposing, upstream of the village of Rouaine, remind the proximity of the gorges du Verdon, followed, before Entrevaux, of their smaller counterparts, but a little more separating differences climaliques bass Provence and the Alps, and that olive trees do not cross. The villages here and there dot a landscape that happens to meet earlier in the region, between Digne and Sisteron: black gullies, cirques of synclines perched, ridges barred grey limestone, small torrents often dried in low-flow period, and this impression of being at the end of the world...
Nothing here yet is far from other assets of the region: a small Nice time, the country leans to the North on the foothills of Mercantour. To the West, the first Lake of the Verdon is hidden from view by the col de whores - to the es. To the South, the long series of straight ridges monte to the assault of the Cheiron, overlooking the countryside of Grasse. To the East, finally, the Var sneaks towards the hanging villages and orchards, just behind Nice... Lavender, olive trees and cicadas shoulders so snow, larches and chamois. These differences in a small territory allow a wide variety of floral and animal, but also modes of life, and built heritage.

An original story

The sector of Annot-Entrevaux was an original story due to its exceptional geographical situation. The country of Annot is rich in remains of the iron age. It is Roman that the small area develops around the two cities of Glanate (Entrevaux) and Annotum (Annot). These have the advantage of being located on the Praetorian way connecting Limiez apt. Since the collapse of the Roman Empire, it seems that the christianisation took place early enough and that the ancient Roman cities very quickly became the seat of new religious power. Also, Glanate become Sedz then Glandèves is the seat of a bishopric by the end of the 5th century.
From the XI century, two small cities will experience profound changes, their location even will change. Glandèves saw the construction of a new Cathedral in the 12th century whose dimensions were far superior to those of worthy or Sandra. A new city, perched on a rock overlooking the River takes the name of Inter Valles and begins to strengthen.
Annotum become Sigumania, also abandons the ancient site but it goes down to the River: destruction of the former rebel city by the comte de Provence, razing of homes on order of Louis VIII suspecting a Waldensian heresy or landslide of the ledge on the city, the mystery remains.
In 1481, Provence passes to the Kingdom of France. Therefore, the city of Entrevaux becomes border town and the entire region will be repeatedly converted into battlefield as wars of Italy against Charles Quint François Ier. Then the wars of Religion, particularly violent in the Verdon, reach the country. In 1574, Annot, fief Catholic, is attacked by protestants: many people have gone through the wire of the sword and burnt municipal buildings.
As early as 1624, Richelieu decided to strengthen the fortifications of the markets of the Kingdom. Then in 1690, a new event occurs: the Duke of Savoy allied himself to the Austrians. Louis XIV decided to carry out a genuine "corset of fortresses" to prohibit the passage of the Alpine passes. Vauban, Briancon to Entrevaux work charge, restructured all the fortifications. Safe walls of Entrevaux, now southern tamper proof lock, new buildings are built. The new Cathedral is home to first-rate religious furniture: symbol of the relative opulence of the bishopric.
The country of Annot, from the 18th century, also has a certain prosperity. Polyculture is the successor to the traditional pastoral system, small-scale industries develop, such as sheet and tiles and pottery factories plants. But these companies, affected by the industrial revolution, will not hold the exodus towards the cities. However, from 1960s, tourism gives momentum to the country which today develops quality between coastal and mountain tourism.

Nature recreation

Possible activities are numerous when the weather is clement, i.e. almost throughout the year!

Hiking

It is the Queen of the country. You can bind the market walk with many other activities: discovery of villages, remains, discovery of speleology, walks among the rocks of sandstone for climbing path...

MOUNTAIN BIKING

Gladed areas, ridges with gentle curves, deserted roads even in the month of August: the decor lends itself perfectly to the subject. A Board for beginners: train on the paths of glue-bass between Annot and will (see our proposal): beautiful landscapes and progressive altitude. After this confidence building, it is a network of roads and other trails "hell" waiting for you everywhere.

Horseback riding

Opportunities are also numerous mountain biking, paths and routes often common to both activities.

Climbing

The practice grows mainly on the Annot sandstone. There are for all levels, from easy to the extremely difficult, blocks (a bit like Fontainebleau, much more in the North) to the cliffs... Equipment, reliability, was carried out by the firm Asymptote, DIGNE, well-known professionals. Points are "concrete" and trimmed it were with art!

Caving

A possible recreation in the famous caves Méailles (see proposal) and Benoît: most don't require specific hardware, except for non-sensitive clothes and lighting equipment.

Whitewater sports

Water is Queen in this mountain country where she dug torrential beds in multiple colors. Not meant the atmosphere of Colorado for the gorges de Daluis or that of the gorges du Verdon for some tributaries of the Var, superb receipts? Rafting and kayaking are the Queens of the spring activities, a season where the eventful discovery of the gorges de Daluis made figure of course featured.
As the descent of canyons, the reputation of the Southern Alps is more to do, he must admit, Annot or Entrevaux is probably the most central and ideally placed for exploring within a radius of 50 km the most famous gorges of the region (the Artuby canyon and other tributaries of the Verdon, due to Amen(, the Cians gorges and its tributaries, great classics of the Estéron Valley, Rioulan clues, to Aiglun...).

Northern leisure

Annot offers to the glue-bass an exceptional Nordic site, the years where snow is at the rendezvous! 70 km of slopes, rather easy, but sometimes long crisscrossed vast panoramic plateaus, under the Rent Puy. The slopes are wide, which allows skaters do not interfere with the traditional founders. Children are not forgotten (two toboggan runs are their delight) and their parents may even rent the 'kids sleds. With the La Colle Saint-Michel site, nearby, the Alpes de Haute-Provence have in the sector of a northern complex of 120 km, which deserves a detour or a stay! The general atmosphere reminds Scandinavia, enjoy the great outdoors and silence, hours during ski-in ski.

Dog sleds and pulkas Scandinavian

The site of cross-country skiing of the Colle St-Michel has more than ten years. It is mostly frequented by skiers Digne and nice that there are a vast northern area of 60 km. The originality of the Colle St-Michel is the separation of the northern area in two distinct parts, separated by the road.
The area located north of the road offers 30 km of slopes permitted to practice Scandinavian polka and sledding. If you do not want to make the 30 km, you can simply track the Frigoulier, 17 km, or even the Coulets track, 9 km.
By against, on the other domain (to the Southeast, Montruvel) the sleds and dogs are strictly prohibited, it is the exclusive domain of ski cross-country, classical and skating.
For many years, Scandinavian sleds and sledding enthusiasts know the Highlands of Champlatte that eerily recall the landscapes of the Scandinavian mountains.
To access to the Colle St-Michel from St-André-les-Alpes, go up the Valley of the high Verdon to Thorame station, 16 km, and then shortly after, a small well signposted route leads you in 8 km to La Colle St-Michel Attention: in winter, snow tyres are essential the the Colle St-Michel Nordic centre is open the summer and winter.

Méailles cave

Benchmark: Departure from Méailles, 10 km from Annot northward; follow the small road to the Combe during about 1.2 km, brutally, the road makes a right angle, here Park your vehicle (parking). Duration: 5 h A/R with exploration. Vertical drop: for the pedestrian approach, 320 m, for the exploration of the cave, 100 m.
Difficulty: easy access, average for exploration. Security: take several lamps in good condition with new batteries. No special difficulty, but be aware that the floor is slippery and often slanted. The uninitiated should not extend beyond a few hundred metres. Map: IGN series blue St-André-les-Alpes 3541 West

This cavity is very known hikers and cavers of the region. The entrance to the cave (where the access trail is clearly visible) is located at the foot of the cliffs around the Cul-de-Boeuf plateau East of the rock of the FRP, under a deep overhang. Numerous prehistoric remains have been found during archaeological excavations in the years 1950-1960 by the team of the Association of prehistory and caving of Monaco. This work enabled to find a wealth of information on the life of our ancestor from the Neolithic to the iron as well as age of countless human and animal bones dating from —6000 to —5000 BC.
From the car park, take the well marked path which descends northward to reach the bottom of a thalweg mostly dry (green markup, some cairns). Crossing the thalweg and follow North trail that goes back the sparse scrubland, in helping the cairns and the markup. The trail crosses a canal of watering on a pontoon and continues northward. He soon reached a climax and crosses the ledge after a few metres downhill. He then takes a North-East direction and runs along the foot of the wall in a plant environment much cooler than that encountered so far (North slope). It reached the cave, consisting of a large main gallery and a small diverticulum right down. The lower part consists of a succession of basins more or less filled with water following the season. There are two remote entries from 20 m one from the other, passing under high chimneys and hopeless. Then, the Gallery is 10 metres wide, high 3 to 4 metres, sloping regular and easy. Scree for 100 m ground, calcified then;150 m from the entrance is a tributary long 80 m, posing as an elongated room partially divided by concretions, dispensing water. This water runs through the rest of the cave, whose soil is then a succession of large gours, up to a terminal basin siphoning.
Important: leave no even organic waste in the cave; do not break the concretions and do not disturb the bats.

Little lesson of geology

Méailles cave is a unique geological position: the floor of the cave is indeed on top of a layer of limestone from the Cretaceous, while the ceiling is the basis of an upper stratum, belonging to the lutetian. The cavity is thus wedged between plots of the era secondary and tertiary. The base of the lutetian is a puddingstone (conglomerate of round pebbles cemented by limestone), which gives to the ceiling of the cave a unusual appearance; There are also very well the vertical joint who led the excavation. In the second part, the Gallery adopts a beautiful trapezoidal profile and ground is occupied by large gours, natural pools formed by small dams of calcite deposited by running water. The destination of these waters is well known: they remake surface sources of Mahfuz, 2 km to the South, that lie logically in contact with secondary and tertiary courses. The General slope of the cave correspond exactly to the dip of geological layers, about 30 degrees to the South; This feature allows the underground hiker easily exceed the depth of 100 m, something extremely rare in France (in other cases must use suitable equipment and ropes for vertical wells).

Argenton and gorges of the Beite

Benchmark: departure from the village of Annot, approximately 5 hours round-trip, 850 m elevation, no special difficulties, map IGN blue series Annot-Entrevaux 3541 is

If Goscinny and Uderzo had known Ahuja, they would have found the inspiration for a new adventure between Gauls and Romans.
The remains of a mausoleum (probably the oldest known to date in Gaul), intrigue hikers and passionate researchers. Visitors flock the France and even the United States to discover this magical place and meet bonus the famous Marcelline Jacomet.
"After the workout, the reward". This popular expression will take home all its meaning when you have climbed the Gorge Trail and your turn you will install at his table.Paul Bocuse in person has moved so far to meet Marcelline and make explain it (the story does not say if it has revealed all its secrets) her miraculous recipe for duck with porcini mushrooms!
In the village of Annot, first take the path of Argenton. The paved road ends under the railway viaduct and found the "Caladage", vestiges of the old Roman road. The trail crosses the Beite on the bridge of Boulem. Always follow the main trail (marked yellow and red) while neglecting the primers of trail. The path which followed until then the left bank of the Beite rises gradually, and leads further up to the col de Peloussis (1,340 m, Panel). Overlook trail which leaves to the left towards Méailles and follow the well marked trail which descends slightly to the North, on the side of the right bank of the Coulomp. The trail passes the ruins of the hamlet of Peloussis. After a slight climb, reach the houses of Argenton (1,324 m). The farm the more to the North, on the road to Lucille, was that of Marcelline Jacomet.
•    To do less: you can also reach the hamlet of Argenton coming Entrevaux (shortest hike limited to 3 hours and a vertical drop of 600 m). Road access borrows on 5 km direction worthy by the RN 202. Then turn right by a winding road that rises to Castellet-les-Sausses, village perched at the wonderful! 6 km from a narrow road (caution), half paved but very passable leads you to the col of the Fam (parking). Take while walking the logging road that plunges in the axis of the village of Argenton located on the other side. At the first junction, take right and then left at the next. Again take to the right then to the left always approximately toward the Southwest. There are a few orange tags, and then trolling becomes a well marked trail. Leave the orange tags left to continue down to the Southwest. After a few switchbacks, the trail crosses Braux watering canal. Then continue the descent, cross the coulomp bridge, then turn right on the path of Argenton.Follow the cairns in towering on a hilltop, cross a barrier and, arrived at the ruins of the Rabouls, continue in the direction of Northeast along a wall. A power line crosses the road, then the trail disappears. Cast on right bank of the thalweg to finally reach Argenton. The farm the most northern is "Marcelline".
•    Living otherwise: the sector of Argenton also lends itself to various ramblings at VTT, facilitated by the wild character of the area and the maintenance to the State of the runway of the non-paved road that goes up to the village. The less daring will be transported by vehicle to the col of Argenton and will be then quietly slide on this track until the Lunières (between Annot and le Fugeret). The bravest nation this same track with their ATV to continue their loop thanks to the very nice path joining the village of Méailles (simply follow the markup of the BPWG from Argenton pass). This possibility of descent is much better than using the footpath of the gorges of the Beite (a path which crosses the sandstone and which will be much difficult for little confirmed practitioners).

The statue of Argenton

In 1910, the Abbot Sauvaire parish priest of Entrevaux and passionate antiques discovered the Villard district, near Argenton at 1300 m altitude, one well curious statue and several architectural elements: pieces of cornice, part of the rangetop encircled by stones 1 m 50 in diameter and two disappeared carved heads. The statue depicting a figure sitting, wearing a kind of robe, was decapitated. Who was this character, what was the use of the monument and how to explain the presence of it in a place so isolated? Thought a time that he could be a funerary monument erected near the patrician villa of a rich a silver mine operator; but it found neither mine money (despite the name of the place) or villa. And then thought to a votive monument erected to the glory of a goddess. Today, scientists are opting for the following hypothesis: that would be the mausoleum of a rich Roman dating back to the 1st century BC and certainly the oldest building of its kind known in Gaul.

The col of Fam to the sources of the Coulomp

Benchmark: Access: earn between Annot and Entrevaux Gueydan bridge and go up to the village of Castellet-les-Sausses. A road (North-West) then leads to col-fam. duration 7 h A / r. height: 630 Mr. fix: do not take children too young, otherwise no particular difficulty except a passage of scree in a hundred meters. Security: don't forget 'tennis' to walk in water, a stick for balance, a string of 6 meters to provide or help climbing in steep places. Attention: the old trail, dissected, is unusable.Map: IGN blue series Annot/Entrevaux 3541 is.

We invite you to a very beautiful aquatic hike between the Daluis gorges and the Annot sandstone. It will bring you to the sources of the Coulomp. We recommend that you make in the summer heat, to better enjoy the freshness of the wave. The source of the Coulomp is a resurgence, the torrent flow is constant, summer and winter alike. A good beautiful place, immortalized by the painter Pierre Arcambot, native of this beautiful area. At the pass of the Fam, ignoring all other paths, take the logging road that plunges in the village of Argenton axis; descend to coulomp bridge and then turn right on the path of Argenton. Join this hamlet (read the more accurate description of this first part in the description to Argenton and the gorges of the Beite) then continue towards the Northeast by a balcony trail, first in good condition then becoming delicate in the crossing of a zone of talus. After descending, the trail crosses a gateway coulomp, starting point of the hiking aquatic (3 h A/R until the sources of the Coulomp). Left after the bridge, take first the path of Earth and stones up to the old mill. Cross and follow the current sometimes on the banks, sometimes in water according to the whims of the torrent (water is very cool!).
Water tumbles from the mountain on nearly a hundred of metres. You are near the waterfalls and the show is guaranteed. Gourmets can eat huge and fragrant raspberries in season and in the vicinity. Will need to climb up to the source captured, a nice exercise, but the reward is at the end. Next, you will need to retrace your steps to the village of Lucille where the picnic is recommended under the shady fees. Before exiting, a visit to the village is required. There are approx. 1 h 30 walk.Below the village of Lucille cross the ravine of Grave and reassemble in front to find a good path which rises towards the South... Before arriving at the col of the Fam, the trail becomes a road.

Equestrian excursion on the banks of the Vairy

Benchmark: departure of Annot, a small day, hike in easy terrain, map IGN blue series Annot/Entrevaux 3541 is.

This is a quiet crossing to the pas since Annot until the village of le Fugeret, on the edge of the river of the Vairy. This excursion is accessible to all. No need to be cavalier Emeritus. You will discover a rural and forest environment exceptional through Oaks and chestnut trees, on old Mule trails that dominate the Valley and along vast holdings.
Annot, leave in the morning at the fresco and back on a mountainside on the right bank of the Vairy. Before arriving at goodness, you will need to cross the River (easily).
The Woods give way to a broader Valley and the track is less narrow. Why not engage in a canter if you want? Later, after altitude, can be seen right on top of the Ruch and left the peaks of the Charmette with two highlights, the peak and the Rent Puy.
At a bend of the track, found the river and appears the village of le Fugeret, that must be crossed walking. You can of course stop le Fugeret, but if you want to continue, we recommend to push on to the Chastel, using small said trail "path of goats", now borrowed by sheep! It is a magnificent plateau where you can picnic in the shade of the chestnut trees and take a NAP while your companion horse are peacefully.
Return to Annot is done the same way, and yet the landscape is very different from that of the morning: could include longer admire the famous cliffs of sandstone of the village.

The Annot sandstone

The small city of Annot seems whole dominated by a series of gigantic blocks stranded in the middle of the fields, silent witnesses of a forgotten chaos. The Annot sandstone, a sedimentary rock composed of many small elements linked by a limestone cement, is the result of a particular geological phenomenon which has made the reputation of the city and attracted the interest of specialists. The neophyte, he is more attracted to the poetry of the scene. In amount the way of the cross to the chapel Notre-Dame Hill to town, one is struck by the symbiosis between the mineral and plant (chestnut trees and ferns fit into the rock) and by the way while the man has taken advantage of these bulky blocks. How many sheds were built in leaning on these rocks for two or three centuries? Further, houses troglodytes show oldest occupations. There are many rocks that have a proper name: the witch, the camel rock, the rock lights, one hundred markets...
The strangest among them all, the chambre du Roy, is a magical place and willingly, it is said that a King of France would have found shelter on there.
Annot climbing site is quite original. Firstly because the rock is a sandstone with very friendly, although aspect of different consistency of sandstone from Fontainebleau (the supreme reference for sandstone climbing!): the Annot sandstone are more abrasive, less compact. Then climbing is here made of course of blocks and small loud well-appointed channels 10 to 20 m. the Annot sandstone began to be well known in the world of the "climbs". We see rock climbers come (and back!) by far for a weekend at Annot.
It takes time to adapt! There are mainly two types of passages: those in fine grip and other rather physical outlets in the form of holes. Many of these holes have been cut, but it is so well done! High art...
The course of blocks (or rocks from the station)
Are accessed from station Annot (large car park) and then in 5 to 10 minutes walk. The choice of difficulty is likely to satisfy all levels:
•    Black TD +: (12 runs for the 4 c to 7A),
•    Red TD -: (23 passages from the 4 to the 5 c),.
•    Blue D/D +: (34 runs in the 5A 3 c)
•    and yellow AD -: (29 runs of 2 and 3).

•    The sector of the Jardin du Roi is 25 minutes walk from the blocks. Take the signposted path (the path of the sandstone) that led to the King's Chamber, and just before you get there, turn left. In the programme for this sector, 10 lanes of 15 metres (rating average 6 c).
•    Last sector, more away, that of the rock of la Balme (15 channels in majority of mid-level, 5B, 5 c, 6a) and slab Beite (16-channels, rather easy, excellent for beginners. From the 4 b with some beautiful 6a, always in adhesion). To reach it, to park in downtown and ride about 30 minutes on the path of Argenton, an ancient Roman road.
•    To do less: the climbers will confine themselves them to visit on foot the amazing profusion of sandstone rocks, borrowing the famous road of the sandstone behind the station. Annot and the neighbouring village of Allon have joined their efforts to build a beautiful centre of cross-country skiing and mountain. Under a blue sky azure, this small resort in balcony Valley offers the Walker steps a truly exceptional natural area and a panorama on the border peaks of Mercantour and the mountains of Provence. 70 km of forest tracks maintained by places grassed, to practice with an equal happiness Northern activities and mountain biking. Walkers wearing Snowshoes are also allowed on the slopes, on condition that they walk on their edge.

Go to go (1,070 m) by road from the col the Iscle or Annot by glue bass (400 or elevation in the first case, 700 m in the second) and win successively glue bass then 2 miles to the North the glue of Annot. You will then find the BPWG Variant that will (depending on the direction) of reach your town of departure to the price in both cases, a nicely technical course on trail.

Traditional architecture varied

Here, the Provence flirts with the Alps and the altitudes vary considerably. The villages of the surroundings of Annot as Braux, Fugeret, Rouainette, Saint-Benoît, are consisting of storey houses, very tight one against the other, and organized from the bottom up according to a typical pre-Alpine: stable, kitchen, bedrooms, attic and dryer plums or chestnuts (souleiaire). They are constructed of local sandstone masonry by a lime mortar. Originality of Sausses sector, housing on the same mode are built in lock red plaster-bound. If the houses of village have a nice consistency, differences offer more particularity. Around Braux and Méailles, they are built in flat and covered with slate Stone. Further to the North at Peyresq Vergons, Argenton, isolated farms are big massive houses covered with a roof with 4 slopes of slate and larch shingles. The stable nearby with the kitchen to retrieve the animal heat and the Hay loft caps the building. Long wooden balconies are on the facade. What a contrast with the Valley of the South. In the sector of Entrevaux, all the houses are on floors, covered in Roman tiles. Here it is in a southern zone: olive and Walnut have replaced pine and larch.

The ravine of Saint John

Benchmark: Departure: pont Saint-Joseph, 4 km from Annot on road worthy time: 4 hours altogether. Authorisation period: from 1 May to 30 November from 10.00 to 18 h. fix: no fix, no particular risks. The helmet is advised, as in all canyons down the wetsuit is sufficient and in summer; by high temperatures it is unnecessary. Map: IGN blue series Annot/Entrevaux 3541 is.

The torrent of St. John is a tributary of the Galange, on the right bank, at the level of the Rouaine clue. It is a small beautiful canyon in very wild surroundings, dug into limestone. The suite presents itself as a succession of beautiful waterfalls, 5 m to 20 m, interspersed with horizontal parts. There is little difficulty peculiar to the flow, if you have of course, a good technique to recall. The first two waterfalls are the highest. Moorings are obvious, except for the fourth waterfall, which is a tree trunk that serves as a mooring. No jump is possible, but there is a small slide at the end. At the exit of the canyon, continue in the Galange, pass under the bridge Saint-Joseph and exit as soon as possible on the right bank to go on the road.
•    Do more: can lengthen the route (or visit it on two occasions and on two separate sections) starting the ravine upwards. Access, initially, is common with the short version of the ravine, but after the 2 pins in S, should instead continue the paved lane. The trail continues along it, and then crosses the Creek at the start of the descent (count this time 1 h 30 from the car). Down then successively four cascades of 3 m, 7 m, 4 m and 10 m, finally by a beautiful slope of 28 m. out then the throat by a last jump of 6 m, before joining the lower part, easily following the course of water and avoiding walking in the water, but rather on the edgesin order to respect the prefectoral Decree. Link is a bit long (3 km) and is reached the downstream part of the ravine above. Allow for 2 h of descent more, and a 60 m rope.

The fortifications of Entrevaux

After the Piedmontese invasion of 1690, the renovation of the fortifications to the South has emerged as a priority. Vauban was commissioned by the King to reshape the strongholds: Entrevaux holds his attention then. As early as 1693, the royal engineer offers a new enclosure for the city and a set of fortifications plan that allows the maximum use of me amazing rocky outcrop which bar the Var. The new cabinet will be performed only after 1697, but as early as 1693, the ancient walls are complemented by two bastion towers and Puget Thenier door is reinforced. But it is the link between the urban fortifications and Citadel which concern Vauban; He wants to direct access. Thus begins a gigantic construction that will last 50 years: the construction of the road. A dozen ramps built on the side of rock and protected by a parapet of rocks leads to the Castle. After the 9th ramp, an esplanade overlooks a small Châtelet built in 1693 and equipped with a moat and a drawbridge. Three platforms to canon dominate the Valley. The 11th ramp provides access to the Citadel itself built on the ruins of the medieval castle of the Glandevez. The space of the courtyard was used to have guns towards the mountain. Inside, two spaces are remarkable: the Hall of medieval origin, remodelled in the 18th century and the commandant's House, kind of Dungeon in 1697, at the top of which the view embraces the entire Valley.

Chapels to oratories

Benchmark: departure of Annot train station, arrived at Entrevaux station. 7 h of walk, 1000 m of height difference, no difficulty if it is the length of the trail. IGN blue series map Annot/Entrevaux 3541 is.

This is a small time travel we offer you. Take your Pilgrim for a day's staff and cross walk of Annot in Entrevaux! A smooth, adventure to discover the charm of the old paths of the past, country farms and forgotten hamlets.
From the station, cross the bridge on the Vairy and turn left (BPWG markup) in the direction of St-Jean-du-désert. The path that follows the Vaire quickly becomes a path. He descends two switchbacks to circumvent down a secluded House, then rises in hairpins in the forest and joins a trail following left until the ridge that closes the downstream of the gorges of the Ga-lange. Go left a little further down and leave on the right a primer of trail. After a succession of climbs and descents, we see below an electric pylon to which it moves. Then join N 202 and the pont St-Joseph. On the other side of the bridge, take the track that rises right in the laces. After crossing a talweg, abandon the track to pick up the trail on the left. At the next intersection turn also left. After a beautiful crossing on a mountainside, the trail reaches the picturesque hamlet in ruins of Ourges. Pass through the hamlet, cross a first Valley, and then along a due small. After this, cross Creek at Ford to climb the wooded rump which is opposite, and where the trail is little marked. At the Summit, one reaches the imposing Chapel of Saint-Jean-du-désert (counting three hours to arrive so far).
The Chapel, down a grassy col to the South where it joins the GR 4 that we follow to the col de St-Jeannet (1 278 m, public speaking). From the pass, keep the right path to cross the ridge of the Content (highest point), then begin the long descent to Entrevaux. After about 40 minutes of descent, the trail connects with the asphalt road which you follow to the hamlet of Bay, near the Saint-Claude Chapel. 300 m after the village, take the right path on the left which leads to the farm of the Martine and joined the road. A little further, leave the road left at the level of a power line. After a descent in the Oak Grove, joined once again trail route. At the first corner on the right, use the left-hand path that cuts the lace, then after the following at some length, take the cemetery level the small trail left reaching through the terraces and olive trees, houses of Entrevaux.
•    Living otherwise: to ATVS, the proposed route is obviously more tiring and involves a series of difficulties which obliges to variants of routes designed to avoid a maximum of portages. Since Annot, it will firstly follow road worthy until the bridge Saint-Joseph (via the Scaffarels) and one win by the track the hamlet of Ourges. The section that follows, after a brief respite on the hillside is however complicated by a compulsory porterage (but relatively short) near Saint-Jean-du-désert. Then, the slope mellows to the col de Saint-Jeannet, where there are various possibilities of descent on the Valley: one, by GR 4 that it will follow on Entrevaux, corresponds to the described hiking route. The other, easier (as it avoids the ascent up to the crest of of Content, then through the steep descent on the other side by pouring South), is to let roll towards the Northeast until the Plan of Entrevaux. Starting 7: for the full loop, including the return by road between the Plan and Annot or Entrevaux and Annot.
To return to your starting, use the train des Pignes.

The chapel of Verimande

Small chapel outside the city walls, Annot, the chapel of Verimande (or Velimande) allows a small easy walk at the end of day. Probably founded by the Templars from the oral tradition, it is then the old Priory of the Benedictine monks of Saint-Pons in Nice. This pretty rough rural building, architecturally contains only a covered nave of a Roman tile roof topped with a small belfry. The building is preceded by a porch covered in the same way as the nave and supported by two massive pillars. The chapel underwent many reconstructions. Inside you can admire two canvases by Raphaël Duranti: a Madonna and child surrounded by bishops Saint-Martin and Saint-Pons (1675) and Saint-Fortunat and Saint-Innocent (1677).

The "bridge of the bride", the "cascade of Amen", the "Pif-through, the" dizziness ", as many mythical places not to be missed and that you can discover at the discretion of its technical skills, kayak, raft or aquatic hike."
The Daluis gorges are a superb route which worth to him alone. Martel does in indeed not deprived himself and has lowered and reassembled in 1906. On the other hand, by high waters, the course is not formally recommended because places disappear between high walls and there is almost no possible shutdown. With a reasonable water flow, you can engage without fear, despite the various rapids of average difficulty along the route. The most known, as Cantet, is recognizable from the deck of the bride. Rapids are then linked to each other in an exceptional environment. In the course of a turn, you will discover the final cascade of the clue of Amen. A judgment is always possible to admire this marvel of nature, and if by chance you took in your boat a 50 m rope and a harness, you can always try you on the latest recall. Then, the gorge widens gradually until Daluis, point of arrival for this descent.
•    To do less: lovers of water sports bright bit of kayaking techniques will descend this gorge rafting. •    The otherwise live: another possibility of discovery of this magnificent gorge, water hiking, practicing during the summer months, at the time of the floods of the river. The starting point of the downhill is once more the Roberts bridge. The technical difficulties are almost nil at low water, with the exception of many passages in the bed of the Var that are complemented by many sections of bumpy on one market or other banks. Note that this course would become very committed thunderstorms (with the additional risk of rock falls) or high water. A small day for this full descent between the bridges of the Roberts and Daluis.
The clue of Amen is also one of the most beautiful descents of canyon of the Southern Alps. But be careful! Its difficulty is quite different, because it is a long race (6 h of descent, most 2 h of a superb walking above the bridge of the Roberts), with a dozen reminders (on nearly 300 m of ascent) whose most impressive lie in the close final party. Provide the classic material of the descent of the canyon and a 70 m rope and rope in the event of problem. Attention also to the flow of the Var, that may need to be able to cross to the arrival of the clue in order to back up the road on the other shore by a present dating the first Valley met following the course of water downstream.

The gorges de Daluis

The appellation of "provençal Colorado" is not presumptuous for the gorges de Daluis. Don't miss you pause for a moment at the foot of the Super Terminal cascade of the clue of Amen, or you might have the chance to spot reckless property frogs clinging to their rope.
